As a result of Oregon Senate Bill 6 we can no longer accept donations of any form

We are a no kill organization and work only with veterinarians and non profit, tax exempt organizations. We provide a safe sanctuary for handicapped cats, education about handicap pet ownership, medical assistance when funds are available and litter to other rescue groups, low income individuals and the elderly when funds are available. We support and applaud the efforts of individuals working to save feral cats in addition to home pets of all species.

We want to build a pet hospital and sanctuary to help others help rescue animals. It has recently become much harder in Oregon to save animals as a result of Senate Bill 6 propelled into law by the Oregon Humane Society (OHS).

With the passage of SB6 supported by OSU, “an individual or organization” “that solicits or accepts donations in any form” that “keeps, houses and maintains in its custody 10 or more animals” are now required to have a license and are under the review of “an authorized representative” of an enforcing agency (i.e. OHS).

This effectively stops retail outlets from doing adoptions since they often accept 10 or 12 cats and kittens, house them and accept donations from vendors for the care of the cats and kittens.

To be clear, money, supplies, food and TIME VOLUNTEERING are considered donations.

The few dollars and food donations from individuals and stores that are received that went to the care of the animals must now go to an “enforcing agency”. OHS IS recognized as the “enforcing agency” in all of Oregon with State Police powers.

OHS is a very wealthy entity (per 2012 form 990 page 11 line 11 Investment – publically traded securities $17,475,840.00) and now they have effectively shut many of us down (with no investments portfolio) which will lead to the deaths of many animals.

Worse yet is the horrific trauma animals will suffer when OHS goes in with their euthanizing vehicle at sites, catching and euthanizing on site traumatized netted cats claiming they were unadoptable.

In addition, Oregon Humane Society is not cat friendly and kills all feral cats. They also only accept the most appealing, aesthetically adoptable cats for a fee (go to their web site and read their inatake requirements). Once accepted, if they are not “chosen” to go onto adoption at OHS and generate revenue (profit), they are euthanized or “partnered out” to another organization to most likely be euthanized.

They do not help the feral cats, severely handicapped animal, aged and not cute at all anymore or the one needing hospice care to end a quality life in peace and comfort. We and other small groups did that to the loud protest of OHS. Not once did they offer flea treatments, general vaccinations, dental care assistance or snap tests (FIV/Felv test) to any of us. T

hey did attempt to pressure us to relinquish through attempts to cause duress (4/2/2013 OHS officer visit – letter sent to sentors and representatives and was ignored).

OHS is nothing more then a glorified tax exempt pet store with mainly free labor (volunteers) with a director, Sharon Harmon, earning $209,041.00 reportable compensation/other compensations and her husband Gary Kish (listed as Development Director) making $115,651 reportable compensation/other compensations in 2012 for a combined total of $324,692.00 in 2012. Sharon Harmon  has been Executive Director since 1998 (15 years). Per form 990 for 2012, OHS lobbying non taxable amount came to $509,331.00.

It comes to money – Sharon Harmon and and her husband made over 30% of one million dollars. OHS spent over one half of a million dollars in lobbying to shut us down which will result in revenue to fund OHS and the compensation packages of two specific individuals by giving animals to OHS to sell and profit from in some form of revenue generation (there are multiple ways to profit from animals, both dead and alive, who have no choice of their fate but the most recognized is grants received for numbers of intakes and donations – based on the belief that the intakes all lived – while unconscionably disregarding of the dispostion of the bodies, dead or alive).
SO… In order to raise funds to support our work, we now offer Kitty’s Gone Green!TM for sale. It is the litter we developed for the cats in our sanctuary to use and is distributed by Whole Pet NW, sold in many retail stores in Oregon, Washington and Idaho and is available by mail order. Kitty’s Gone Green!TM is also the only patented litter that benefits the soil. The patent was allowed April 2013 and is not yet published but is allowed. Please visit Kitty’s Gone Green!TM for more information about the litter we developed and will support us.
